A 1960 graduate of Burwell High School, Austin is a graduate of UNL who was in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to his retirement, reaching the rank of captain, in 1993.

He took up golf at 25. He became sufficiently proficient to be a club four-ball champion and twice the low-net winner in his age group at the Nebraska Senior Amateur.

Gary began volunteering for the NGA in July 2007 and within three years agreed to be its volunteer coordinator. Currently, more than 80 volunteers are on his roll.

He’s assisted with state high school championships, many college tournaments, numerous USGA and PGA qualifying events and an USGA championship.

He has been honored by the Nebraska School Activities Association and the NGA, which presented him with the Virgil A. Parker Special Recognition Award in 2013.
